Project Succeed Group
Project Succeed is a 4-session support and educational program for adopting and adoptive parents. Project Succeed parent groups address a wide range of topics related to adoption that will help parents feel more comfortable in thinking about and discussing adoption. Participants will share their questions and concerns and receive support from other group members, all of whom share an adoption experience.

Project Succeed and Kids Connection groups meet at the same time and place, to maximize family support around adoption. Group leaders are social workers, educators, and are often adoptive parents themselves.

The Kids Connection Group

The Kids Connection is a safe and positive environment to explore feelings and thoughts about adoption and an opportunity for your children to meet other adoptees! Kids Connection groups introduce elementary and middle children to various aspects of adoption, helping them feel more comfortable thinking and discussing it with their families, and providing a “normalizing” experience within a group of adoptees only. Activities include art, music, stories, role plays, reading and discussion.

The Kids Connection groups run in 4-session blocks, with each session building on skills learned in the previous session. Group leaders are counselors and social workers with adoption expertise and provide feedback to parents after each session.

Session 1

We are all adopted.  This is my family.

Session 2

Peer relationships and adoption.

Session 3

Everyone has feelings.  Building self-esteem.

Session 4

I am adopted and this is my story.

Kids Connection groups meet at the same time and location as the Project Succeed Parent groups. Minimum enrollment is 6 children and limited to 12 children.

Teen Education and Support Group

As children enter adolescence, they frequently turn to their peers for activities and advice, making it difficult to maintain open communication with their parents. Teen adoptees also may struggle with an extra layer of challenges related to their adoption. This 8-week group will introduce teens to various aspects of adoption, helping them feel more comfortable thinking about and discussing it within a group of adoptees only.

Specialty Adoption Summer Programs (just for children who were adopted, ages 7 - 12)
All parents want their children to enjoy positive self-esteem and friendships. Nevertheless, adopted children sometimes feel "different" from other children, making it more difficult to form good peer relationships. We have designed a week-long, day camp to help build self-esteem, practice day-to-day social skills, and learn how to make and keep a friend. Along with social skills activities, children will explore identity, family, and feelings about adoption.

Our summer programs this year combine adoption and social skills/self-esteem activities with horseback riding for 2 sessions and art education for 1 session. A portion of each day will be dedicated to arts and crafts, music, and other activities designed to highlight the daily theme. Leaders are clinical social workers and educators, therapeutic riding instructors and art educators.
