Adoption of Older Chinese Children With Special Needs
The Children in Need of Adoption
Boys and girls from ages 1-10 are available who have medical issues such as Hepatitis B+, misshapen ears, missing fingers or limbs, one arm/leg shorter than the other, deafness or severe hearing problems, or congenital heart problems (already repaired).
The China Center for Adoption Affairs has approved Adoptions Together for Special Needs adoptions and sends us a group of 5-6 children to recruit families for on a quarterly basis. You can see our current group of waiting Chinese children by clicking here.
Some of the children have been in an orphanage since birth and some have been in the orphanage for less than a year. A number are also in foster care waiting to be adopted. You may not adopt more than one child at one time.
Parental Qualifications for Adoption in China
Married couples between 30 to 50 years of age, with or without children, may adopt a special needs child. Single women between 30 to 50 may also adopt. Single men must be 40 years or older. All applicants must have a good income (more than $10,000/person in the family) and show that they have the educational, psychological, and medical resources to provide for the child’s special needs.
China Adoption Programs and Procedure
All families must have a completed homestudy to be pre-approved to adopt. If a family is interested in a specific child, they should contact Sandy Rappeport, srappeport@adoptionstogether.org to discuss the information that is available about that child as well as the family’s unique qualifications. Once a tentative match is made, the family must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) that AT will submit to CCAA along with information about the family. CCAA will approve the match and issue a Pre-Approval (usually in about a month). Then the family submits their dossier to CCAA. CCAA will then review the dossier and issue the Travel Approval (TA). The family will typically travel 6-8 weeks later to pick up their child.
We strongly recommend that both parents travel to China to finalize the adoption in country, although only one parents is required to travel. You may travel with a group of between 2-6 other families for part of the trip but you may also travel with just our guide. The typical in-country stay is about 15 days.
The trip to China is a wonderful opportunity to experience your child's culture and to travel "worry free" with all of the details arranged by our delightful English speaking staff who will meet your plane and remain with you throughout your stay until you bring your child HOME!
