Carol Edelstein, Director of AdoptionWorks

Carol Edelstein is the Director of AdoptionWorks, a program dedicated to placing children from public foster care throughout the United States, into adoptive homes in Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia.
Carol has over ten years of experience working in special needs adoption and over twenty-five years of professional and volunteer experience working in human services. She was one of the creators of AdoptionWorks’ 27-hour adoptive parent preparation training, which is specifically focused on preparing families to adopt older children with histories of trauma and multiple losses. Carol has presented on issues related to special needs adoption throughout the U.S. She was instrumental in having a Maryland law changed to facilitate the enrollment of out of state, school-age children in their pre-adoptive families’ local public school without delay. Now, prior to the finalization of their adoption, families will not be charged tuition for their child to attend their local public school. Carol became a strong advocate for maximizing older children’s opportunities to be adopted, as well as placing siblings together, after she adopted her two daughters at the ages of 5 and 6-1/2, over thirteen years ago, with the help of Adoptions Together.

Susan Ogden, Director of Domestic Adoption

Susan Ogden, Director of Domestic Adoption at Adoptions Together, MA Education, has worked in education and program management for 25 years.  The Domestic program direction at Adoptions Together includes advocacy for better understanding of adoption today and its relationship to child welfare and foster care.  Adoptions Together's Domestic program places 60 infants and 25 school-aged children each year.

Ms Ogden is an adoptive mother of a 13-year old girl, Sasha.  Her family's open adoptive relationship was featured in the New York Times in October, 1998 ("Secrecy and Stigma No Longer Clouding Adoption".)

Ogden has published in Adoptive Families magazine and The Washington Post. In 1999, Ogden and Celebrate Adoption members published An Educator's Guide to Adoption, a booklet for adoptive parents to give to their childrens' teachers.  The Guide, now in its 5th printing, was written up in USA Today  and has been distributed throughout the United States.  Ogden was invited to present the Educator's Guide on the Rosie O'Donnell show in 2000.

One of Ogden's major directions at AT is outreach to broaden acceptance of adoption as an option in high schools, crisis pregnancy clinics, hospitals, churches and other community organizations that work with youth and women with unplanned pregnancies.  She designed a three-hour seminar, Trends in Adoption Today, for the professional community and has delivered it to 24 area hospitals.

Adoptions Together produced a Guide to Adoption for Health Care and Counseling Professionals to coach those who work with women considering pregnancy options.  In 2004, Ogden produced an educational video, Adoption...Real Stories, which presents open adoption and its benefits to all parties.  This video is being widely distributed throughout the Washington Metropolitan area.

She and her colleagues also deliver Family-Building Through Adoption to business employees to promote awareness in the community of the African American infants and children who need permanent homes.
