Adoption, Foster and Kinship Care: "Increasing Awareness in Your School"

Since 1993, the Center for Adoptive Families has been providing an informative and dynamic in-service training, entitled Adoption, Foster and Kinship Care: “Increasing Awareness in Your School," to Baltimore/Washington area public and private schools and regional Boards of Education.

Adoption, Foster and Kinship Care: “Increasing Awareness in Your School" provides practical information and strategies for school professionals to work effectively with students and families touched by adoption, foster, kinship care and other family constellations.

Children of families built through adoption, kinship, or foster care face issues of identity and loss, which can affect school performance and peer relationships. Their parents also must cope on a daily basis with society’s bias toward biological families, possibly impacting their interactions with school personnel.

Among the topics presented are:

  • Commonalties among non-traditional family constellations (i.e., adoptive families, blended families, foster families, single-parent families);
  • Developmental perspective of adoption
  • Unique issues facing relatives parenting children
  • Positive adoption language
  • Curriculum considerations
  • Developing partnerships with parents
  • Child's perspective of adoption
  • Signs of adoption-related issues in school-age children

Teachers, counselors, school social workers, psychologists, Special Ed staff, nurses, principals, and aides would greatly benefit from our training:

  • Increase confidence and skills in addressing issues regarding adoption and other family constellations
  • Enhance classroom performance and self-esteem
  • Improve communication and collaboration between parents and school personnel
