Full Description:
Creative Expressions: A Group for Adopted Children and Their Parents
Art therapy utilizes artistic pursuits and the creative process as catalysts for improving physical, mental and emotional well-being. Research demonstrates that art therapy can be highly effective with both children and adults, and affords opportunities for expressing feelings, building trust, and enhancing self-awareness. It can be especially beneficial for children who are not comfortable or fully capable of expressing their feelings and emotions verbally. For parents and kids who are having a difficult time connecting or communicating effectively, the arts can be powerful mechanism for bridging that gap. Through the use of art, some of the issues addressed would include trust, attachment, grief and loss, abandonment and rejection, and effective communication. Examples of possible projects include self and family portraits, creating a family symbol or mural, and clay creations, and mediums might include painting, drawing, sculpture, sand art, and Paper Mache.
Pre-registration is required for all programs.
