International Adoption – China Adoption Services

Since 1993, Adoptions Together has been working with Chinese officials to help find families for orphans. Our families have been pleased with the personal, compassionate care they received from our agency during the process of adopting a child from China.

The China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA) is responsible for inter-country adoption and the nurture of children within social welfare institutions. Adoptions Together is honored to have been granted accreditation by the China Center for Adoption Affairs. Our agency was approved in 2005 for handling special needs adoptions from China.

The Children from China

Due to population overcrowding, China instituted a one-child-only policy. Coupled with the cultural preference for a family to raise male children, some families will abandon their female children to make the children available for adoption. Chinese children that have  been abandoned are then placed in the care of an orphanage. They enter the China adoption process with CCAA and are matched with families that wish to adopt. Prospective families will be able to review the medical and developmental information about the child. The child will typically be between the ages of 8 and 13 months at the time of travel.  Regulations in China dictate that parents may not adopt more than one child at a time unless those children are twins.

Adoptions Together also helps families to adopt waiting children in China who may be older or have some form of medical need. These children include boys and girls up to age 13 who have a range of medical needs.

Eligibility for China Adoption

CCAA has strict regulations to ensure that children are placed with the best possible parents.  Prospective parents interested in China adoption must meet these minimum requirements:

  • Each parent can be no younger than 30 and no older than 50 years of age when their dossier is registered. To adopt a child with special needs, the upper age limit is 55 years.
  • Only married couples are eligible to adopt a child from China in the non special needs program. The couple must be married a minimum of 2 years.  Single women are eligible to adopt from China through the Special Needs program.  Prospective parents wishing to adopt a child from China must be in good physical and mental health, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or under.
  • The family’s income must be at least $10,000 for each family member (including the child to be adopted), with total family assets of at least $80,000.
